Apple has been fighting patent-related issues with a company called VirnetX since 2012, and it doesn’t look to be ending soon.

According to Law360, there was a post-trial hearing recently, and VirnetX has formally asked a Texas court to ban iMessage and FaceTime features from access to customers. That post-trial follows a verdict against Apple, which was handed down earlier this year, that saw the Cupertino company forced to pay upwards of $625 million to VirnetX in damages. That eventually led Apple to file for a mistrial in February.

VirnetX, for its part, actually wants more money, though, and is requesting $190 million in additional damages.

“At a post-trial hearing Wednesday, Texas technology company VirnetX argued that although an injunction blocking Apple’s popular video chatting and messaging features, along with a virtual private network on demand feature, may seem like a harsh remedy, it is necessary because of the irreparable harm Apple’s infringement caused the company. VirnetX also asked the court to increase the jury’s damages award by at least $190 million, arguing that Apple has been the “poster child” for unreasonable litigation tactics.”
This case dates back to 2012, where VirnetX was originally awarded $368.2 million in damages from Apple. In 2014, that decision was tossed out of court, due to the verdict handed down being influenced by the instructions that were provided to the jury. It was decided that another case, over the same patents, would be started, and this is the result of that retrial.

VirnetX isn’t a stranger to these types of situations, as many have called the company a longtime patent troll. They’ve gone up against the likes of Microsoft as well in the past.

Wait, so it was awarded to this company, then it was thrown out, then reapplied, now they want more? I’m confused.

The only thing VirnetX does is patent trolling. That's their entire business model. try reading what they were originally awarded damages for. Thankfully that verdict was thrown out and now a new trial is to be started.
