The sixth generation iPod nano has been hacked by developer and hacker James Whelton. James was able to hack the nano by bypassing its cache comparison and installing a Springboard hack. For now, this only allows you to delete one of the pre-installed apps and create a blank spot. This may not seem like much, but it does demonstrate that the nano can be altered. James is quick to point out, however, that the nano has not been jailbroken, “I do not have root access over the device. I did not “install” an app. I figured out how to remove them and insert a blank space into the springboard.”

Mr. Whelton also found references to possible additions to the nano: “Next is the discovery in some of the device’s plists of reference to support of Movies, TV Shows, Apps, Games, vCards, Calendar events and so on, with a few other cool things like a passcode lock. With the bypass I figured out, I hope to enable these pretty soon. It seems like the OS is a rehashed version of the previous Nano’s OS.”

The iPod nano that James is currently working with just happens to be a pink 8 GB nano that he won. He started hacking it on a flight home after winning the device.

It’s doubtful that Apple will introduce apps for the iPod nano anytime soon, at least not until the annual September Event, at the very earliest. The sixth generation iPod nano now looks very much like a mini-iPhone. As the operating system continues to develop, it will be interesting to see if it does become an actual iOS device. You’ll need a magnifying glass, however, if you ever want to watch a movie on the tiny 1.54-inch screen. Imagine watching The Lord of the Rings on a nano.

Hacking any iOS has almost been more of a hobby rather than a hassle. And it helps apple to push their updates sooner. DEFINATELY a plus!!!

i woulden't be surprised if an AppStore for it came soon. The nano is just a bit like Firmware 1.1.2 which i remember to be empty as anything.
apple has just about broken even with the amount of iDevices i've bricked...

Buying one of the new Nanos is something I still regret. It's like carrying a shuffle around...with a touch screen...lame. Apple should have stuck with the last generations style and made improvements on that. Maybe some good will come from hacking it though...here's hoping!

This is a great first step, I always thought Apple's latest incarnation of the Nano was lacking when they left out video capabilities. I mean isn't the whole point of progress to add features? not take them away? I would love to see a larger video-capable Nano that you could still wear as a watch, I mean they have watches like that already in Japan. I actually designed something similar to Apple's newest Nano at university, unfortunately I didn't patent it so I don't have a leg to stand on, otherwise I'd be rich

The nano is utterly useless. Would have been better as a watch. It serves no purpose at all

It does tho its great for working out and playing music for a good deal of time. Yes its cool as a watch but its also a very good mp3 player.

Also this is a good start for things that may come with the nano

Disagree. I´d rather take my son´s nano when I go out skating, than my iPhone. And I´d rather have my earbuds' wire coming down inside my shirt to my pocket than tangling down to my wrist.

This is definitely we do it cause we can hack. It won't add too much usability to anything or make anybody's life a whole lot better. Don't get me wrong though, props to the guy who did this, still pretty cool.

I guess my point about it being useless is pretty subjective. I love my iphone 4 and ipods are great, but I don't see why anyone would spend the $ for an ipod nano. I'd much rather get a small cheap non-apple MP3 player without a touchscreen for use during physical activity. Most likely larger capacity too.
