The iPod touch has been sporting the iPhone 4s' A5 chip for a number of years now and has yet to see a refresh from Apple. This could all change in the later half of 2015, according to a source familiar with the matter.

Apple reportedly plans to refresh the iPod touch lineup in the later half of 2015 with more modern specs to handle the updated iOS firmwares better. The iPod touch has been widely dubbed Apple's iPhone without the phone and has been popular among people that simply want the ability to use iOS without a contract and without buying an iPhone at the full unsubsidized pricing.

The report goes on to detail that the iPod touch is likely to retain its 4-inch display so that it remains a portable music player. This keeps it from competing directly with the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus, or even the iPad Mini for that matter, and gives those looking to save a little money a way to listen to their music with many of the perks of the latest versions of iOS 8.

It is unknown what chip Apple would put into the next-generation iPod touch, but it would almost certainly be one that has already existed in a previous-generation iPhone. It would likely be a 64-bit chip process like in the iPhone 5s and later. Tweaks to the cameras, storage space, memory, and other hardware could also be present.
