Although a jury suggested that Samsung pay Apple just over $1 billion for patent infringement, the Cupertino California company plans to ask a judge for three times that amount according to a recent report. The Korea Times citing “multiple legal sources” reported that Apple’s legal representatives plan to ask U.S. Federal Judge Lucy Koh for $3 billion in damages from Samsung. For those of you who didn’t know, when the jury determined that Samsung had infringed on Apple’s patents in August, it recommended damages be paid to a total of $1.05 billion.

A “reliable source” recently said Apple will be requesting that Samsung pay more than $3 billion. A hearing between the two tech giants is scheduled for September 21st which is when Apple will supposedly ask for the amount. The source said the following regarding the matter:

The decision means Apple wants to quickly address the harm that Samsung's infringing products are said to be causing. As has been the case throughout this trial, Apple is pressing its full advantage over the jurors' decision.
If Apple does choose to ask for the $3 billion in damages, it would be the largest payment ever sought out in a technology patent dispute. Samsung on the other hand is hoping to be able to convince the judge to toss out the jury’s ruling with the company even vowing to appeal in court.

Why is Apple so vigorously pursuing Samsung in recent years? Simple, Apple are worried and scared of the increased competition. People have been ripping off Apple, and using lower case i to piggy back on Apples success for example, for years. They didn't do anything then because no one was a threat until now.

there are no winners here. Apple's image has been tarnished. A lot more people see them as a greedy company.

Riiiight, nobody saw them as that before when they are always higher priced. Laughable.

Of course, they should have gone after them for patent infringement before they infringed. Another genius statement.

Companies have been "infringing" on Apple patents for many years but only in the last few years they decide to do anything...

I didn't say Apple should have gone after Samsung specifically years ago, but the other companies that have done the same as Samsung is allegedly doing recently.
You must not have understood my genius statement.

Right. $3 billion. Rubber banding overscroll, the most talked about of the patents, is worth that much. Yes.

They may have a claim here only because I have heard people express an interest in the cheaper Samsung devices because they are rip offs of Apple products. It's like the thinking is, if Samsung lost the case then these products must be comperable. (they're not btw) that's got to eat into Apple's (200% mark up) profits.
