Anyone that uses Microsoft Messenger will need to get ready to convert to Skype soon. Microsoft has named March 13th of this year the date of which Microsoft Messenger will be shut down and users will have to start using Skype to send instant messages. Skype was bought out by Microsoft in 2011 for $8.5 Billion.

Anyone who has used Skype, whether for the personal computer or for mobile devices, knows that Microsoft has been pushing users to link their Microsoft Messenger accounts with their Skype accounts. This would merge the two contact lists and allow users to seamlessly instant message between the two clients, using Skype as the go-to application.

Microsoft has notified users of this change with an e-mail, which reads:

On 15th March 2013 we are retiring the existing Messenger service globally (except for mainland China where Messenger will continue to be available) and bringing the great features of Messenger and Skype together. Update to Skype and sign in using a Microsoft Account (same as your Messenger ID) and all your Messenger contacts will be at your fingertips. You’ll be able to instant message and video chat with them just like before, and also discover new ways of staying in touch with Skype on your mobile and tablet.
Skype users really shouldn’t be affected by the transition, as users will still be able to use the great instant messaging abilities, voice and video calling features, and file-sharing capabilities. Users of Microsoft Messenger are advised to download Skype before the cut-off date so they can have a smoother transition to the superior messaging client.

According to Microsoft, if Microsoft Messenger users don’t install Skype after March 15th, Microsoft Messenger will not allow the user to sign in and a notification will prompt the user to upgrade to Skype.

Interesting. Doesn't it seem weird that after a decision like this that you can't add Skype to the Windows 8 Messenger app?
