More ebook-related trouble for Apple today. China Daily is confirming that the iDevice maker has been slapped with a $118,000 fine in response to Apple's alleged copyright violations.

The penalty amount will be used to compensate three Chinese writers at the center of this copyright infringement claim. Apple purportedly made their books for sale online without first obtaining their permission.

A China Daily report Wednesday stated the Beijing No. 2 Intermediate People's Court ruled in favor of the authors, and Apple will have to pay them in excess of 730,000 yuan (US$118,000) for the infringement. Apple had not gotten permission before selling their books on the Apple App Store, it noted.
Presiding judge Feng Gang reminded Apple that responsibility falls on the company's shoulders to ensure that they have the necessary clearance and authority to sell the ebooks uploaded by third-party providers.

"The writers involved this time include Mai Jia, whose books are often on bestseller lists across the country," Feng stated. "In this way, Apple has the capability to know the uploaded books on its online store violated the writers' copyright."
