In a tangible effort to better compete with Apple's iPad and Amazon's popular Kindle Fire - both of which are massive hubs for games and apps - Barnes & Noble today announced that it is expanding its extensive catalog of reading and entertainment content.

For Nook HD and Nook HD+ device owners, Google Play is coming. As a result, the retail book giant says, "customers have access to more than 700,000 Android apps and games, millions of songs and more."

Barnes & Noble’s tablets will even include popular Google services like the Chrome browser, Gmail, YouTube, Google Search and Google Maps.

“By adding Google Play to Nook HD and Nook HD+, we are offering our customers even more great entertainment on our award-winning tablets,” said William Lynch, chief executive officer of Barnes & Noble. “Now with access to more than 700,000 apps and the best reading experience available, NOOK HD and NOOK HD+ are must-see products for entertainment lovers looking for high-quality tablets at incredibly low prices.”

Nook HD is available starting at $199 and Nook HD+ starts at $269.

I got my mom Nook Color a few years ago and it was very limited. There was only a handful of apps you could download. Too bad they aren't including previous versions of the Nook.

I got the first kindle fire. Very limited on app selection. Rooted the first night and eventually put a full android os on it. These brought google market/play store. This made it MUCH better, but showed me how much I prefer ios. Now I have the ipad mini (LOVE IT!!!) and passed the kindle fire to the family.

Will it be available only on new nooks? My wife has a nook HD that is 4 months old. I wonder if it will be made available to those who already have nooks?
