Third-party retailers are currently reporting stock-outs or near stock-outs of Apple’s 27-inch Thunderbolt Display, once again fueling rumors that the company is preparing to release an upgraded Retina display model. A number of resellers including Adorama, Fry’s, CDW and MicroCenter are all sold out of the Thunderbolt Display, reports MacTrast, while PowerMax MacConnection and others are running low in inventory.

The stock-outs mirror an identical situation seen in February, when even larger companies like Amazon and J&R noted Apple’s Thunderbolt Display was sold out. It was being speculated that Apple would soon reveal a thinner version of the product which was more in line with the redesigned iMac at the time.

Although it’s unclear whether Apple is indeed preparing a successor to the current Thunderbolt Display model, which hasn’t been updated since its debut in 2011, a high resolution wallpaper discovered an Apple’s serer hints at possible refresh. The image in question is one similar to the blue-and-green wavy background similar to the one seen in Apple’s OS X Mavericks promotional materials. With dimensions of 5,120 x 2,880 pixels, the wallpaper has dimensions exactly twice that of the current Thunderbolt Display and 27-inch iMac. We’ll have to wait and see if the low inventory is an indicator of an impending refresh.

And I just bought a 16:9, 27.5" 1080p IPS display. Don't need retina. I don't want to have to run a game a 1/4th the native resolution to get perfect scaling (the normal reason to game at native resolution) with playable frame rates.

That's why Mac isn't meant for gaming.

I don't think I would ever spend money to get a thunderbolt display, maybe if I were rich, but right now you can get a great display for a lot less!

The stand is wobbly and it doesn't support VESA mounts and I would prefer 16:10 1200p, but the styling and performance are great.
