As MMi reported last month, an incredibly rare Apple I computer from 1976 was headed for auction and expected to fetch upwards of $300,000.

One of the first Apple computers ever built (this machine was personally built by Steve Jobs and Steve Wozniak) went for $387,750 in an online auction held by Christie's today.

But with only 200 of these machines made by the Apple co-founders, some had expected the Apple I to draw a much higher dollar amount in the auction. In fact, $387K almost sounds like a steal.

"This is a piece of history that made a difference in the world, it's where the computer revolution started," said Ted Perry, a retired school psychologist who owned the device (and stored it for years in a cardboard box) before agreeing to put it up for auction last month.

The 11-by-14 green piece of plastic covered with a grid of memory chips above a labyrinth of wires was one of the first 25 such computer elements, and sold for $666.66.
Perry, now 70, became the owner of the Apple 1 around 1980.
