Apple is sweet on a Swedish startup that focuses on data compression and houses the potential to boost the efficiency of iTunes on Apple's various iDevices.

On Wednesday, Apple confirmed to AllThingsD that it did, in fact, recently acquire the company although details pertinent to the purchase remain under wraps.

“Apple buys smaller technology companies from time to time, and we generally do not discuss our purpose or plans,” spokeswoman Kirstin Huguet said, reiterating the exact same quote - verbatim - that Apple gives whenever acquisition news surfaces.

Founded in 2005 by Anders Berglund, Anders Holtsberg and Martin Lindberg, AlgoTrim develops data-compression technology that simultaneously shortens processing times and reduces file size — just the sort of thing for optimizing mobile imaging and video.
If you haven't been keeping score at home, Apple's newest purchase extends the recent rash of acquisitions that Apple is behind.

From wireless chip developer Passif Semiconductor and video-discovery outfit Matcha, to public-transit app developer Embark and crowdsourced location data company Locationary, Apple is bulking up its talent, resources, and technologies in a very aggressive fashion of late.
