Although Samsung and others in the tech world were holding their breath in anticipation - or in hopes - of a White House intervention on the looming Samsung product ban, no relief emerged from Washington today.

On Tuesday, the White House officially sidestepped an opportunity to intervene. Most industry watchers and analysts, however, expected the White House to do exactly what it has done with regard to this matter - nothing at all.

“After carefully weighing policy considerations, including the impact on consumers and competition, advice from agencies, and information from interested parties, I have decided to allow” the import ban to proceed, Obama’s designee, U.S. Trade Representative Michael Froman, said this morning.

The import ban applies to only a small number of Samsung products. Newer devices are not in violation of Apple patents, the situation that prompted the ban in the first place.

Not surprisingly, Samsung is not happy about decision.

“It will serve only to reduce competition and limit choice for the American consumer,” said Adam Yates, a spokesperson for Samsung.

Yeah because everyone's into buying old Samsung products, not new one's...

I like how it really doesn't hurt the Americans that they have a "lesser amount of choice" for phones. It doesn't matter. More people on iPhones than Samsung made phones by almost 3x.

Those old Samsung phones *were* complete ripoffs of the iPhone too, though.

So Samsung won't be able to sell a product that is already 4 generations old and probably not being sold in retail anywhere anyway. Yeah, what a major loss for Samsung

The Obama administration has more important things to worry about at the moment.

I've said this for the past two years...these patent wars don't do anything because by the time they go into court and a final ruling is in place, these models are obsolete. The only way this makes sense is if it hurts samsungs pockets.

The ban is a slap on the wrist, but I'm pretty sure Apple was awarded some $450m.

I love how apple says siri, and voice control and things are so amazing, but what i can tell you, is that my old Samsung SCH-U540 cell phone from 2007, did all of that, way before Apple even had any of it...
