Longtime Apple partner, Nuance Communications - the leading speech-recognition software maker- may soon be up for sale, report sources close to the company.

But it may not be Apple that absorbs the groundbreaking tech maker. Instead, the company may very well end up being acquired by leading Apple rival Samsung.

Nuance Communications has already held talks on a possible sale, although we can't confirm if potential buyers were in the room. It's largely understood, however, that the powers that be at Nuance are good to go with a sale if the right buyer comes along.

The WSJ noted Monday that Nuance has "recently spoken about a possible sale of the company with Samsung Electronics Co. and private-equity firms... It isn't clear where sale talks, some of which happened earlier this year, currently stand or if they will lead to a deal."

With a market cap of $5.5 billion, Nuance would be a big catch for any company. And you can bet that outspoken investor Carl Icahn (who holds massive stakes in both Apple and Nuance) would love to see these two powerhouses become one. Only time will tell what role Icahn might plan in championing that outcome.
