Microsoft has announced that in coming months, Skype 6.14 and earlier on Mac OS X, and Skype 6.13 and earlier on Windows would no longer be supported.

Microsoft recommends that everyone gets to the latest version of Skype, which is version 6.18 for Mac OS X, or 6.16 or Windows. Updating will prevent users on outdated versions of Skype from experiencing issues when Microsoft officially ends support for the earlier versions.

The latest version of Skype also provides users with the following features that aren't available in earlier versions of Skype for desktop:

    • Sending and receiving instant messages when your contacts are offline
    • Viewing consistent and complete chat history across multiple devices
    • Syncing read/unread status on all messages across devices

The latest version of Skype for desktop can be downloaded for free at this link.

Skype also recently released version 5.0 of its mobile application for iOS, but unlike the desktop client, users can still choose to use earlier versions of Skype for iOS if they aren't fond the design changes in version 5.0. Microsoft has not announced that they will end support for earlier versions of its mobile Skype application.

Skype for Linux could use some attention, Microsoft. It looks like Skype for Windows and Mac did 2 years ago, come on...
