Apple has effectively been given a greet light to trademark its signature Apple Store design in Europe according to new reports emerging Thursday.

Specifically, the EU's highest court determined, Apple can register the "layout" of its retail stores inside of the European Union.

Citing the court's ruling, the WSJ says Apple's stores met the "three criteria for a trade mark," which includes:

    1. They constitute a sign
    2. They can be represented in a graphic
    3. They can distinguish the goods or services sold by one company from those of another

"From this the Court concludes that the representation of the layout of a retail store, by a design alone, without indicating the size or the proportions, may be registered as a trade mark for services," the court's ruling reads.
