When it comes to eBooks, a bad week for Apple just got worse.

Following confirmation of the tech giant's mammoth $450 million settlement stemming from allegations that it conspired with publishers to fix eBook prices, market dominance in the eBook arena slipped further from Apple's grasp today thanks to fast-emerging rival Amazon.

As intensely rumored in recent days, Amazon on Friday unveiled its latest endeavor in the world of electronic publishing -- Kindle Unlimited. Kindle Unlimited is billed as a new subscription service for readers in the U.S. and a new revenue opportunity for authors enrolled in KDP Select.

"With Kindle Unlimited, customers will be able to read as many book as they want from a library of over 600,000 titles," Amazon says. Thousands of audiobooks are also accessible through the program, which costs $9.99 a month.

“With Kindle Unlimited, you won’t have to think twice before you try a new author or genre—you can just start reading and listening,” explains Russ Grandinetti, Senior Vice President of Kindle. “We hope you take advantage of the 30-day free trial and try it for yourself.”

With a strong overture being made to new and independent authors, Amazon appears to have one-upped Apple in the eBook business. Now, only time will tell just how popular Amazon's new program will become and what impact will be felt across the electronic publishing world.

Will this replace Audible? I pay $9.99 a month for that and only get to listen to one book a month
