The company which previously offered pen-based Mac tablets using parts from Apple’s notebooks, Modbook, has recently announced a new Kickstarter campaign which supports the launch of the “Modbook Pro X,” a pen-based Mac tablet based off of the 15-inch Retina MacBook Pro offering. The campaign is looking to raise $150,000 with the hopes of allowing users to send in their own machines for conversions that are being sold at $1,999 or reserve complete systems directly from Modbook for a $3,999 price tag.

Much like any other tech offering nowadays, there will be various Modbook Pro X configurations available including a variety of processor options, RAM options and storage options. Other smaller options that will be provided include integrated Keybars on the back of the device and a Keyboard Stand. The Keybars are said to provide programmable access to various key combinations for commands and shortcuts whereas the Keyboard Stand is set to serve as an adjustable stand, keyboard and protective cover.

As of right now, according to the campaign, shipping on the complete system offerings is scheduled for January 2015 in small quantities. Bulk orders for the device are set to come the following month. Customers who choose to send in their own systems are looking at shipping times roughly one month after that.

For those of you who wondering who the potential client may be, the device’s price tag should point that out. The Modbook Pro X targets a niche market that is interested in a tablet running a full version of OS X. It may be appealing for creative professionals or power users who would not only appreciate an OS X-based tablet but are in a position to utilize many if not all of its offerings.

Those of you who are interested in the concept and want to provide support but can’t afford the device or don’t want to purchase it at its price tag can still back the campaign and reap smaller rewards. The cheaper rewards include a $59 Modbook Digitizer Pen and a $139 Modbook Shuttle portable hard drive. It should be noted that the Digitizer Pen is compatible with a number of pen-based tablets and the portable hard drive is a 750GB HDD Modbook Shuttle that comes with FireWire 800 and USB 3.0 ports, a USB cable and DC power adapter.

What do you think about the Modbook Pro X? Is it something you would like to buy or support?
