Although it’s a member of the MCX group which is behind the upcoming CurrentC mobile pay system, the grocery chain, Meijer, stands firm on supporting Apple Pay. Such a move is in apparent violation of MCX’s exclusivity rules so we’ll have to see how the group will respond. As of right now, Meijer’s “tap-to-pay” near-field communication (NFC) terminals are compatible with both Apple Pay and Google Wallet. This is in contrast to what MCX partners like Rite Aid and CVS did when they disabled their NFC terminals shortly after the launch of Apple Pay.

For those of you who didn’t already know, MCX (Merchant Customer Exchange) is a consortium of merchants who are standing behind the forthcoming mobile payment system named CurrentC. As part of the MCX agreement terms, retailers are to exclusively support CurrentC which would leave out competitors such as Apple Pay and Google Wallet. Rumors are also claiming that merchants who continue to support Apple Pay could be hit with fines, despite MCX stating these rumors aren’t true. That being said, the current contracts state that retailers can’t support other payment systems so we’ll have to wait and see what penalties Meijer will have to deal with.

If you aren’t familiar with Meijer, it is headquartered in Walker, Michigan and the grocery chain has more than 200 stores across the United States. The brand has expanded from a grocery store and moved closer to what is considered a “hypermarket” offering department store goods and even gasoline alongside its groceries.

MCX’s CurrentC is set to roll out in 2015 and is set to utilize unique QR codes that are presented from a user’s smartphone upon checkout. The major partners include Walmart, Best Buy, CVS, Rite Aid, Meijer among a few others. We’ll have to see what comes of this whole situation as time passes but the whole issue is quite a hot topic with all of the statements and events that keep popping up.

What’s your stance on the whole situation?

I'm Glad. Meijer is by far my favorite local retailer and has been on the forefront of latest technology. They were one of the first to have an app displaying store maps and item locations within the store. I've already been using apple pay there along with their perks app (helped me save over $100 this year). Also for people that prefer to stay away from Walmart.

If CurrentC is not going to be available until next year, then there isn't anything to be exclusive about right now. I know that if they allow Apple Pay now then CurrentC will not get the traction they want, but nobody thinks this will work except the retailers who are hoping versus knowing.
