Apple has reportedly given certain developers from big name companies monitored access to its Apple Watch headquarters in Cupertino California in hopes of building out a solid initial app offering when the device launches in April. Anonymous sources told the folks over at Bloomberg that representatives from BMC, Facebook and United Continental Holdings among others have spent weeks camped out at a secret Apple lab, testing their apps on the Apple Watch hardware. The first batch of apps are expected to ship alongside the device next month.

Unsurprisingly, Apple instituted stringent security protocols to ensure that the secret stayed within the company walls. Sources claimed the rooms have no Internet access and people moving in and out of labs with test Watch hardware are prohibited from bringing in outside materials, even going as far as being unable to bring notepads. One of the representatives had to bring in app code on a computer that stays at Apple’s campus in order to test it. Apple is even storing source code locally and only intends to release it to the companies closer to the debut of the Apple Watch.

The sources claimed that the hardware is slow at times, especially when interacting with an I Phone via Bluetooth. As of right now, it remains unclear whether the issues will be resolved by launch or if they are indicative of what users can expect. The developers are reportedly still working on optimizing the software to improve the end user experience.

The Cupertino California company is expected to detail the capabilities of the Apple Watch as well as announce launch apps at a special event on March 9 at 10:00am PST.
