no it does not tell you the firmware. I have a brand new iphone and I don't know which firmware it is. Also I am unable to option-restore to update to 1.0.2 because it does not let me select the folder and none of files inside work.

I simply connected my iPhone to my Windows computer and started iTunes. Then, by clicking, Help and then About iTunes, it scrolls the iTunes version but also the firmware version of your "apple mobile device". It does not do this if you follow the same proceedure in OSX iTunes. You only get the iTunes version number.

The easiest thing to do is download the 1.0.2 firmware and Option-Click on the Restore button when at the Activation Screen then browse to the firmware you downloaded. It can never hurt to update to 1.0.2 even if that is already what you have.

Make sure your iTunes is updated though as Independence would not recognize my firmware until I updated to 7.4.2.
