Well, not really. The Flashlight apps simply display color and can vary in brightness. This app would change the brightness level for the whole system, which would mod a system file (I think). I really hope that you can get your app in the app store, you could make quite a bit of $$, which would more than compensate for your time (hopefully!) :-)

Hope to see a release soon!

ToggleBacklight is available from the MMi installer.
This is one of the most useful and most frequently used apps I had on 1.1.4 and I would gladly pay for it in the App Store or make a donation in the real world for this ported to 2.x.

I have two places that I use it regularly: my work requires frequent shifts from dark to bright spaces during the day and at night in bed it's the first icon that gets tapped!

Please update this super useful app for 2.x.

    Thanks

(to the tune of Blue Oyster Cult's "Godzilla")

With a purposeful grimace and a terrible sound
Jobs crushes his faithful followers down.

Helpless users on the Apple train
Scream bug-eyed as he looks in on them

He picks up an app and he throws it back down
As he wades through the iPhone like a giant crazed clown

Oh no, they say he's got to go
    Go. Go Jobszilla. Yeah.
Oh no! There goes a bricked iPhone!
    Go! Go Jobszilla! yeah.

    History shows again and again
How the market abhors the arrogant men.
    They all go; like Phillipe Kahn and Gary Kildall;
    Go!
    Go Jobszilla!
    Yeah.

Same here. I guess I'm not the only one who uses the iPhone as a sleep aid.

I read somewhere that «The MacOS toolchain is bundled with Apple's PackageMaker.»
(You knew that already, I bet) ...

Is this PackageMaker kit available for Windows? I thought that none of the Apple developer tools were officially distributed for Windows. NetMage mentioned that he's working in Windows.

Maybe I am, but there is a later reference from Netmage where he mentioned that he currently only "work[s] on Cygwin on Windows". I should probably have asked if the kit you mentioned was ported to Linux or Windows and not just Windows.

While we're all waiting for this, I created the ability to dim the screen. It uses the idea from the old Extended Preferences hack, dimming the screen after a user-selectable period of time. Very simple addition to the General Preferences plist. If you're interested, it in another thread here. Sorry not so easy to track down links on the road with my 2.1 iPhone.

I am hoping to get this going once Saurik releases his 2.x dev environment for Leopard, which may be late this week.

I just want to say that I made my own hack/ish solution for toggle backlight...

    here is what I do:

    1) download "flashlight" from bigboss source.

    2) download backgrounder -

    3) set your phone to the lowest brightness you want to use, so you are toggling between SUPER BRIGHT, and the brightness your setting now, the low one.

    4) run your low brightness setting and when you want to go superbright, launch flashlight, which makes the brightness 100%, and then hold the home button to background enable flashlight, and your phone will stay at 100% brightness.

    5) when you wanna toggle back to the low level of brightness, just relaunch flashlight and hold home button to disable background, and when it quits you are back to your original brightness.

too bad someone can't make a backlight program that does exactly this? its almost like the functionality shared between backgrounder and flashlight could just be combined into something standalone?
