I found a sweet new utility called Insomnia when I saw this bug ticket on MobileChat's bug tracker system. The link to Insomnia's page is in there. This is possibly the utility many people have been waiting for.

Developer's summary of what Insomnia is:
Insomnia is an iPhone native application that, when enabled, will prevent the iPhone from sleeping, thus overriding its default behaviour. This allows background applications to continue to run and WiFi to work long after the screen has been switched off.

(The iPhone's default behaviour is to sleep 30 seconds after the screen has gone off, when not docked and charging that is).
I've tried it on both EDGE and WiFi and it works great. It never logged me out of MobileChat (I'm using AIM) while my iPhone is in sleep mode! The developer states that it should be in Installer soon for those who doesn't want to manually install.

Edit: Insomnia is now in Ste's repository in Installer

I took a look at the source code and I somewhat understand how it basically works. When Insomnia is enabled/on, it stays running in the background kind of like a daemon until you toggle it off from Springboard again. When idle sleep is about to start (30 seconds), Insomnia sends a keepalive to the Power Management system to prevent the device going to idle sleep.

Overall, this is a very handy app for IM, IRC, iRadio, VNSea, and basically any other app that requires a constant Internet connection. It's quite convenient to use as you can toggle Insomnia on/off right on the Springboard by just tapping on its icon. Note: It WILL increase battery usage for obvious reasons, so keep that in mind.

The developer is the same one who works on the haptic keyboard app:

http://code.google.com/p/iphone-haptics/ (notice the same project owner in both Insomnia and Haptic)

I have been looking for this kind of app for days!!!! THANK YOU likwidfuzion! This app is especially great when using Firefly Media Server to stream music from your iPod/iPhone to your computer. This way you can turn of the screen and still keep your wifi connection active. Thanks again!

I have never used JohnTool, so I can't tell you if it is like it. But what I can tell you is that you can toggle Insomnia on and off from SpringBoard and it will not change any of your power management settings as far as I know. It is simply a background process that prevents idle sleep.

Oh, I just fixed it. Just need to chmod 755 on the isomnia file.
