I got my iphone4 about 2 years ago from an apple store at full price. (but locked with ATT)
It was on version 4.2.1 and baseband 03.10.01
Since then, I have been using gevey sim to latch on to the network in India. All the while I was on IOS4.

Now, I came across this seller on ebay, who removed my IMEI number from the apple/ATT database. And, according to him now the phone is "factory unlocked".
(I have verified the phone status here - iPhone Carrier Check Widget)
The next step provided is to connect to itunes and restore.

My question is - Can somebody explain how it works? My gevey sim would not work with higher IOS.
    Any feedback is appreciated!

You need to restore your iPhone to get it reactivated by iTunes.
Factory is simply putting a check mark on your IMEI or if bought from apple store which is already fac unlock , iMEI is not in their locked to carrier database
