My Iphone 4 is crashing and I am getting ready to restore it anyway but I am not to clear about the 4.2.1 ... I have been seeing 3g/3gs but it does not really make note of the iphone 4...

You can but if you want to jailbreak it will be tethered.

Not too sure, dev team is working on it though.

To be clear, can you update an iPhone 4 to 4.2.1 using Pwnage (custom ipsw, no baseband update)? I understand the jb will be tethered.

I havent tried it yet. But I believe that is right. Not sure though. Try loading a 4.2.1 ipsw into pwnage and see if it takes it.

It doesn't accept 4.2.1 for iPhone 4. There is a custom bundle for 3GS in update 3 on dev team blog... I'm assuming we'd need one of those for iP4 as well.

Ya I just checked this morning. No go on custom 4.2.1 for i4 yet. They may wait until they figure out how to make it untethered before they release a updated pwnage tool with all the 4.2.1 bundles in it.

I see lots of custom bundles going around that do not include the jailbreak (but still prevent a baseband update)... however, adding them to pwnage still does not allow it to pick up 3,1_4.2.1_8C148.

EDIT: I downloaded a 4.2.1 IPSW from Apple through iTunes and pwnage+custom bundle picked it up just fine (in advanced mode). I was previously attempting to use one downloaded from http://www.felixbruns.de/iPod/firmware/ and it would not work. Strange, I've always used it for firmware... I wonder what is different.

Okay, I'm now on 4.2.1 with 01.59.00 but not yet jailbroken, so custom bundles do exist... and they do not include the jailbreaking bits (nor cydia, obviously).

Yep, that's what I did. I'll do the iPad next, should be similar.

You wont need a custom firmware for iPad though.
