    Hi all

So I have this iPhone 3G that was given to me. It is unlocked, and jailbroken, and currently on firmware 3.1.3. I have no idea of what tools were used to do the JB/unlock

I want to upgrade it to 4.2, so I'm gonna ask you a couple of questions so I don't mess up

What redsn0w version is better? I have downloaded 0.9.6rc14. Is that fine?

About the unlocking.. I've read that the phone has to be unlocked with Ultrasn0w to use Redsn0w on it.. but I don't know the tool used.

My plan is to upgrade to 4.2.1 via iTunes and then use redsnow. Is that ok or is there anything else I need to check or find out?

    thanks for any help

ps. Also, what about the multitasking option? Should I check it? And the "just boot thethered right now?" option?

Download the redsn0w rc 16 version, then select the Baseband Update, the Multitasking if you want it, the wallpaper if you want it, and also DO NOT select the boot tethered right now option. It will not do anything an it will possibly brick your iPhone. The "Boot Tethered right now" option is for tethered jailbroken devices.

just stay where u are. for the iPhone 3g, 3.1.3 and 3.1.2 are the best firmware.. if u upgrade ull have laggin problems as well as battery problems.

    Thanks for the replies.

I've read 4.2.1 doesn't run as bad as 4.0 did. I really want some apps that are only available for ios4, and as it seems, this is going to be more and more the case. I'll sacrifice a little responsiveness for the apps.

thanks for the info lolzyeahtech141! I'll try it later and report back.

You'll lose your unlock if you don't preserve the baseband and upgrade to 4.3.3.

You would need to create a custom 4.3.3 fw with Sn0wbreeze (Windows) or PwnageTool (Mac).

Edit: you are on 3.1.x I'm pretty sure you want to hold on to that baseband. Whatever the guy said up there with redsn0w and the bb update, you're upgrading to the iPad bb and breaking your GPS when you don't have to.

Oh, ok. So no baseband upgrade. See, I'm really very ignorant about all this stuff and I was about to do what the first poster said, so thanks for your post!

I'll look into sn0wbreeze. But can I still go with 4.2.1? because I've read in several places that 4.3 won't run on 3G...

Yeah I thought I might type really fast to squeeze this info in for you so you can avoid having a headache later. You have a perfectly good baseband, using the upgrade will not only break your GPS but it will also keep you from being able to restore to any stock firmware ever again on 4.2.1.

You can indeed go to 4.2.1 as that's the latest firmware for your device. Be sure to use the right version of Sn0wbreeze for 4.2.1. I can't remember which but I'll try to figure it out for you if you don't beat me to it.

Edit: Ok looks like sn0wbreeze 2.2.1 is the latest to use for 4.2.1. I would suggest you try 2.2 though because the iPhone 3G doesn't always play well with Sn0wbreeze and I think 2.2 was the better version for your particular device.

You can unlock without the ipad bb, but of you don't, ultrasn0w will not work correctly, or atleast it didn't for me.

That's not true... it's better to not use the iPad baseband if you can. I have seen more people have unlocking problems with the 6.15.00 baseband than others who have preserved their basebands.

It's different for everybody, but I really don't suggest the user to use the iPad baseband when he doesn't have to.

ok, so I created the custom firmware sith sn0wbreeze, and when restoring with iTunes, I got a 1602 error, disconnected the iphone, connected again, tried shift restoring again, and got a 1601 error. I thought I was stuck on DFU mode, but was able to kick out of it. Now the phone is back to normal, but still on 3.1.3

any ideas? I have searched a little, but I have not found a solution to this.

Also, when I built the custom firmware, I did not choose hacktivate, because as far as I understand, I dont need it. is that right?

You need to set your phone into pwned dfu mode with redsn0w before restoring to the custom fw

ok. I did that and it worked.. but I lost the unlock, apparently. Now I can only make emergency calls. I suppose I messed up while building the custom firmware. In sn0wbreeze, do I have to check hacktivate? or somehing in the "unlocks" section?

    Sorry for all the questions..

When you created the custom fw did you use expert mode and go to General and select "activate"? If you did not you should make another one to restore that way.

Oh man.. one more step, but not quite there yet.. :P

I did select "activate" now, it lets me unlock the sim, but it doesn't show any network. I found this:
    iClarified - iPhone - How to Unlock the iPhone 4, 3GS, 3G Using UltraSn0w

should I do that? The phone's baseband is 05.13.04

iAnnie, I promess to buy you a beer when/if I finally get this right!

    Hi,

I also have the 3G iPhone that I've tried in vain to jailbreak it. Your help will be greatly appreciated.

    - Version 4.2.1
    - I use RedSn0w
    - I follow the steps correctly, until RedSn0w starts to "downloading the program" to iPhone. It's the step after putting the iPhone into DFU mode.
    - It's running for few hours, without any result. The progress bar always stays at 3 bars.
    - I've retried 3 times, but all in vain.

Could you please advise me what to do.

I did try the Sn0wbreeze, but it doesn't work neither. I'm quite desperate now.
