You just need to re-jailbreak and then install ultrasnow to unlock.

What firmware did you end up restoring to?
    4.2.1

That should still have preserved the iPad baseband right?

So you should have cydia already on there then right?

Dont worry about losing that iPad baseband. Nothing will get rid of that.

    You sir are a legend!!
    Just one final question!

I just re-jailbroke with redsn0w, on the apple logo here waiting for it to boot!

    Is 4.2.1 tethered?

should I re-jailbreak with greenp0ison to make it untethered?

iPhone 3G is never tethered, so never use that option in redsnow when dealing with a iPhone 3G (you sure this is a iPhone 3G and not a 3GS right?).

Why would you rejailbreak with redsnow? Snowbreeze already does the jailbreak for you, cydia should be on your springboard as soon as it boots up after restoring to the custom firmware.

ok so basically I restore with the CFW, then re-jailbroke with redsnow (only ticked cydia) and it just hangs on the Apple logo!

I am not 100% redsnow should be used at all over the top of a snowbreeze jailbreak. Cydia definitely should not be reinstalled since snowbreeze already installs it for you.

What happens if you choose to hactivate the custom firmware with snowbreeze?

Also , do you have access to a Mac?

    Slight problem...

Redsnow did the job alright, but when I turned the phone off (cydia reboot) it just hung on the apple logo!

I had to start redsnow again and re-select cydia!

    is this tethered?

Ya but iPhone 3G should never be tethered, so not quite sure what is going on.

I suggest putting it in dfu and downgrading back to 3.1.3. Exit recovery with tiny umbrella after you get the 1015 error then use redsnow 0.9.4 to jailbreak (point redsnow to a 3.1.2 firmware). Whenever cydia gives you a reboot or respring button just manually power the phone off and back on. Dont press the reboot button.

    Is 3.1.3 still signed?

I can just simply downgrade to 3.1.3 via iTunes using stock firmware?

What will happen to the baseband? I rely on an unlock

For the 3G they left 3.1.3 because of all the lag issues with 4.xx fw
