It would use a software unlock, carrier unlocks are done through participating carriers.

If you were referring to the software unlock, you should check your baseband. If it is 5.13.04 or below, you will want to use a custom firmware to upgrade to 4.3.3. That way you can preserve the baseband.

If it is not 5.13.04 or below, you will have to upgrade to the iPad bb once you get your phone onto stock 4.3.3, which can break your GPS.

If you already have the iPad baseband of 6.15.00, you will always have unlockability but going to 4.3.3 will require you to use a custom fw as well.

That's good. You'll want to preserve the baseband.

Use sn0wbreeze (better yet pwnagetool if you've got a Mac) to create the custom 4.3.3 fw to restore to.

4.3.3 is untethered so no worries there. You can get sn0wbreeze from and a stock 4.3.3 from the downloads section here on MMi.

You will also want to use redsn0w to put your device into pwned dfu mode (don't try to select any other options) before restoring to custom 4.3.3.

If you've ever used tinyumbrella (if you haven't skip this step) then open it before you open iTunes, uncheck the box under advance option to point to Cydia on exit, close tinyumbrella, then proceed to do the restore to custom 4.3.3.
