My friend has a factory unlocked iphone 4 and ipad 2 he wants ios 5 with. We tried the iphone 4 but it says invalid SIM. Why is this and can i expect the same error with the ipad 2 3g?

Are the devices' UUID/UDID on a dev account? If not, that might be partially why it's erroring out.

If they are on a dev account, try restoring with the T-Mobile SIM inside the phone. If that doesn't work, downgrade the OS to 4.3.x and see if your SIM works there.

The iPad shouldn't have this problem as it is always unlocked. If it doesn't, then there has to be a problem with your dev account or the OS installation.

+1. iOS 5 is beta right now, it's not a good idea to try to use it without a developer's account. There are numerous bugs and problems with it with or without a dev's account, but of course being without a developer's account is more reason not to try it until official release.
