Could I install Cydia and still go to iTunes for updates?

I thought jailbreaking was so I could access T-Mobile, but now I realize it's more. But now I have a phone that works with T-Mobile I just got an iPhone 5 (ME486LL/A (6.1.4), I am missing Springboard, Winterboard . . . Cydia.

    Can I install without jailbreaking?

    Short version: no.

Longer version: while you could technically finesse Cydia per se on to your device, it would not work like you wanted it to--at all.

    You are joking right?

Just in case you aren't. No you cannot install Cydia without jailbreaking. What firmware is your new phone on?

6.1.4 cannot be jailbroken at this time, and it probably won't be for quite some time. You cannot downgrade either, so you're stuck.

Dang! They upgraded in an instant at the T-Mobile store. I guess I'm SOL

I feel so limited by Apple, as if they just love to make things more difficult. And, I swear T-Mobile doesn't use Wifi even if it's available, if I don't have cellular data turned off. So, I dance.

If I returned the phone in exchange for a 32G one (this is 16G) would they mail me one with 6.1.4.? And, if I jailbroke that, would I have to stay off iTunes?

I wish Cydia features could be made into apps for iOS.

    Thanks guys!

It would most likely be on 6.1.4 too. I bought a 32G from T-Mo months ago and it had the latest firmware on it. I'm still using my 4s because of it.
Why in the world would you have to stay off iTunes? Confused.

With my phones that were jailbroken, I couldn't connect my phone to iTunes. I didn't like that.

How come? It's OK to connect your iPhone to iTunes, you just can't update it.

HAH! I'll bet you're right--but I was afraid it would automatically update or read my iphone or do some damage. (If I remember correctly, connecting made my first iPhone into a doorstop) Haha. Guess I missed a lot with all those jailbroken phones.

Hi, if you were unfortunately forced to upgrade to iOS6.1.3 and loose your jailbreak, then there is a way to install at least some Cydia apps if you have a Developer licence. The apps have to be self contained, not depending on other Cydia files. Examples are Movie Box and Music Box.
Some of these free .deb files can be downloaded from
    CydiaUpdates.net
Purchased Cydia apps are not available here. You would have to install it through Cydia on another jailbroken device and then go to its Applications folder and zip the apps folder as per the link below
...convert the deb to an ipa...
JailbreakErra: Turn Cydia applications from a .DEB to an .IPA
Next add your iDevices UDID to your list of developer test devices on Apples website and create and install the resulting provisioning profile on your iDevice via email or using Xcode.
Then you have to sign the ipa with your developer profile using instasign
    InstaSign :: uhelios
And lastly, install the ipa using iTunes or Xcode.

He's correct, although you're not going to be able to install stuff that depends on a legitimate jailbreak (iFile, themes, SpringBoard tweaks, etc.). Remember though, you need to have the IPA signed with a developer profile, otherwise this won't work at all.

If you are not a registered developer then things get harder. You can get UDID activation and Provisioning profiles from a third party source like @Uhelios at uhelios - Store/Donate or some other source found via google.com.

What about something like Pandora Downloader?

Well, at this point, there's nothing about iPhone 5 that impresses me, so I think I'll take it back and pay the $50 charge. No need to spend $630 for a phone that is a PITA!

I need to upgrade my 3GS and my 4 with Cydia and am a bit afraid to do that, but that's for another thread. If I do that I'll have to avoid getting it up to the point of no return (6.1.12?)

Thanks all for your help. I'll post some more questions on a new thread. Any help will be appreciated because I am tres nervous about this.

Nope. Pandora Downloader modifies the normal Pandora App's files, which it can't do without a jailbreak.

Not sure. Never heard of it before, plus it's not on the default repositories.
