Hi Ive just had an iphone 16GB 3G model. Im completely computer illiterate but can get by. Im trying to unlock the phone or do whatever needs doing to enable me to use my monthly 3 network sim card. Ive seen alot of forum chat with firmware, different versions, yellowsnow, red snow.... I just need a step by step tutorial on how to convert my iphone to my 3 sim as easily as possible which ever way you advise. I've started off by what I thought would be a good start by reseting all the phones contacts media and settings to start from scratch. Was I right to do this?? If anybody could point me in the right direction on what I need to do that would be ace as Im a little confused!! Thanks

What firmware and baseband is on your phone, you need to give more information before anyone can help you out.

Thanks for the reply, can I find that on the settings and information? At the moment the phone is going for through the resetting process, is this something I should of done?

Yep, settings>general>about the version is your firmware and the modem firmware is your baseband. As long as your version ( firmware ) isn't 3.1 you will be able to unlock your phone. I would put 3.0 firmware on it and there is a good guide in the iphone news section at the top of the forums page.

A timer or more like a progress bar ? I have never reset all settings on any of my iPhones so don't know about that, I guess just wait a little bit and see what happens. Any time you restore and set up as a new phone you get a clean start anyway. Let us know what happens.

Thanks, its a timer barely moving round in a circular motion. I was worried the only way to get back on to the home screen was to plug it up to itunes or something like that and re-install everything. so do you think it would not of lost its network settings or do you just pick it up cuz i understood it that when you buy these complicated things they programme it up in the apple stores when you purchase them?

On the forums they call that the spinning wheel of death. Did it come back to the springboard or is it still stuck ?

You did not have to do what you did. The unlocking program will wipe your phone clean just by the nature of the beast. All you need to do is download 3.0 custom fw ipsw once downloaded plug into ituens and select info or if you see your phone (Mac) hold option (Win) Hold shift then click restore select the custom 3.0 ipsw and let it restore that custom fw. Make sure its saved on desktop. Let it run its course on your phone till you see the box where its been factory settings.

Sounds like your going to have to restore your phone. What version of iTunes do you have?
It's going to require you put the phone in DFU mode and then restore and jailbreak if desired.

Ive just downloaded the itunes. It was picking up the phone and asking if I wanted to download the latest software for it. I didnt cuz i thought if i did i wouldnt be able to unlock it in the future. but i was to sure about the whole firmware 3.0 process! any ideas? thanks

It was asking if i wanted to restore to the latest version. I cant remember how i got to that point now of the itunes recognising the phone as it was a bit of a fluke!

Are you Windows or Mac? Hopefully you didn't update iTunes and are still on 8.2 or 8.2.1

OK, then a restore will be fine and you'll be able to jailbreak.
