thanks, it's new. on to the next step ...

right, did you guess it would be me

I have followed the steps as stated. After I went out of DFU mode iTunes said it needed to restore, so now I have 4.2.1 installed.

I then ran redsn0w and installed cydia and ipad, so I now have a phone with V4.2.1 and modem 06.15.00

    However, two things:
1/ I open Cydia, it tries for a split second the screen flashes momentarily and nothing.
2/ Secondly, the activated SIM still works, but another SIM card for foreign country doesn't work.

1/ I guess cydia is corrupt, so do I need to install itagain? How?
2/ How do I unlock the phone to all networks?

    Thanks again.
    Andy

You need to turn the phone off then use redsnow again, this time choose the option to boot tethered. Then cydia will work. Go into cydia and install ultrasnow, do not press the reboot button once done. Instead, manually turn the phone off then do the boot tethered thing again with redsnow.

Right I rebooted tethered, second time lucky as redsnow crashed the first time mid process. I then updated cydia and had to do the same thing again and again redsnow crashed the first attempt. I then installed ultrasnow and again it tried to reboot, but here it got stuck. It is on the apple logo. I can't restart no matter which buttons I gold down. I haven't plugged it in to iTunes yet as away from pc but any advice greatly appreciated. I hope it's an easy fix. I'm a bit worried for now.

Basically it didn't reboot after installing ultra snow.

Hi, just want to be really clear because I'm a bit paranoid.

I have a 3GS, 3.1.2, 05.11.07. To update my iOS, I would download a custom 4.2.1 IPSW and use PwnageTool on this file, then use an option+restore in my iPhone in iTunes?

You would download a regular 4.2.1 and use pwnage tool to make a custom 4.2.1 with no baseband update in it. You should find out if you have new or old bootrom first though with idetector.

What do I do with that information? I have the new bootrom. Thanks!

If you have new bootrom then you will want to stay away from 4.2.1 for now since it will be tethered. Do you know what SHSH you have?

Ah, so I'd stick to 4.1? I'm not sure what my SHSH is, by looking at TinyUmbrella I'd guess it's 7D11 (the only SHSH I have for 3.1.2)...?

Press save shsh and see what you get.

Sorry, confused now. How can I tell which SHSH is installed? I don't see anything like that in the log or anywhere else.

edit: I have a huge list of SHSH files from 3.1.2 to 4.3b22, but 3.1.2 is my OS. That would suggest that my SHSH is the one corresponding to 3.1.2, right?

You want SHSHs for 4.1, which looks like you have.

Yup, that list means you can restore to any of those firmwares. I would suggest either going to 4.0.1 and using jailbreakme.com or limera1n to jailbreak or go to 4.1 using a custom 4.1 firmware made with pwnage tool or snowbreeze. Let me know which you want to use and I can point you to a guide.

The jailbreakme.com website sounds quite easy, I guess I'll try that. So I'd just make the custom firmware, load it onto the ipod and use the website? Thanks so much you guys are awesomely helpful.

No need for a custom if you go that route. You will need a official carrier sim to get past the emergency call screen after restoring to 4.0.1 though.

Ooops, no dice then. I don't have my official carrier SIM anymore. I'll go the 4.1 route. So this way I make the custom firmware, then option+restore to load it?

Then you can follow this: iClarified - iPhone - How to Jailbreak Your iPhone 3GS Using PwnageTool (Mac) [4.1]

Before you start make sure to download the latest tiny umbrella: The Firmware Umbrella - TinyUmbrella
Just run it once then close it if you havent run it before. Then follow the guide for pwnage tool
