Everything went really well until I got the error that "the iPhone could not be restored. This device isn't eligible for the requested build." What did I do wrong?

Did you download tiny umbrella and run it first then close it?

Yeah...I'll try it again though. I just run it once, then close it? Don't click save SHSH or anything again?

Nope, you dont need to save SHSH. Opening and closing it "should" set your hosts to cydia which should bypass that error.

Hm, okay. I tried once more using the same file, then I built a new IPSW after opening tiny umbrella but still no luck. Should my phone be connected when I first run Tiny Umbrella? If not, I don't know what I could do different. Should I try the snow method?

No snowbreeze won't make a difference. Try usin tiny umbrella during the restore this time. Open it up. Save shsh first, confirm you have 4.1 shsh. Then run the TSS server then try restoring to the custom 4.1 again.

Awesome, that did it. Up and running. Thanks a ton.

Now you restore and start from the beginning if booting tethered isnt working
Sorry, scrap that, I have restored with it in DFU. A fast learning curve.

But now reading the other posts, here, is it possible to restore to 4.1 rather than 4.2.1 that iTunes does automatically? Bearing in mind where I have got to modding the iPad BB.

Thanks, and I think once this is done it would be worth putting all my Q's and your great A's into one tutorial for other newbies (idiots) like meself!

So everything apparently worked, but I'm having problems with my service now.

The phone knows it has a SIM in but I only get one bar at any given time and I can't find the "carriers" option in my settings. Furthermore, I can't make calls or send SMS messages because my phone "can't detect service."

Any what this means? I'm stumped. My baseband is the same, the phone is ostensibly still unlocked, it even notices when I *remove* my sim, but when I reinsert it nothing happens and I can't do anything

edit: Resetting the network, turning it off and on, etc. don't help either.

    Did you install ultrasnow?

I didn't, but I just did and it's still not working.

I downloaded ultrasn0w 1.2 in the Cydia app and restarted my phone. Same problem persists.

What carrier are you on? Did you try turning off 3G?

I'm on DTAC..living in Thailand now. I tried turning 3G off and on, I've toggled airplane mode and used SBS settings to toggle the phone off and on. Nothing's working

The only other hting I can think of (aside from pulling the sim in and out) is trying another sim in my phone. Won't have access to one until tomorrow, though

You can also try installing ultrasnow 1.1-1 instead of 1.2.

Haha! I couldn't find an older version so I tried to reinstall ultrasn0w. It had a bunch of weird messages this time, so I quit and tried again and suddenly everything is working. I guess I shouldn't be so quick to rule out the "doing the same thing over and over" method. Thanks again, what a headache. Would have taken me months to do this without your help.

edit: Err, it didn't go off totally without a hitch. My balance somehow inverted from +2.00 to -2.00. Oh well haha.
