So now since the US Apple Store is selling unlocked iPhone 4s, can we get the current iPhone 4s unlocked legally?

That would be nice, but I don't see what one thing has to do with the other. AT&T makes their own rules.

This will be nice, since I purchasing one way back from Apple store for the same price when it come out, if they do the offical unlock for me will be nice.

AT&T is still officially feigning ignorance and inability to unlock iPhones, even off-contract ones (I called and asked yesterday about my personal phone). Hopefully that'll change sooner rather than later, but knowing AT&T... don't hold your breath.

I live in Portland, OR. I went to the store and ask. They said ATT will provide unlock service to iPhone 4, but will be cost money. and the rep can't tell how much it will cost. But they said, go back to the store in couple week and see. So I assume, ATT will provide unlock service for all iPhone 4, but just have to paid money for it.

I didn't know if you have to be a ATT user or not. But when I ask for the unlock service, they ask me to get a my phone number, so they can see if you are a ATT customer before provide unlocking.

If so, that would be great. I know many dudes out there are not ATT users. Crossing finger for the unlock service to be here sooner.

Hypothetically, if they allow iPhones to be unlocked, will they require the phone's IMEI to be linked to that account or for that IMEI to currently be active on that person's account?
T-Mobile requires the IMEI of the phone to be unlocked to currently be active on the requestor's account.

Yeah, so have I last year, but when I tried last month, I got this reply:

Thank you for taking the time to contact T-Mobile. Unfortunately, we are unable to provide the unlock code at this time. After review of the account we have determined that the device is not in use with the corresponding mobile number. T-Mobile policies and procedures state that the device must be in use on the mobile number requesting the unlock code. If this is a new device please allow 3-4 business days prior to submitting a new request to allow your usage to update in our system.
I tried to request it again, and this time, the CSR wouldn't even put the request through to the unlock department because he could see the IMEI wasn't online. I was trying to unlock a broken T-Mobile MyTouch 3G with a bad radio to see if it could pick up an AT&T signal because I had one before that could work with AT&T, but not T-Mobile. That's why I couldn't ever get it active to where they would unlock it.

I actually just unlocked a phone with them last week. it was never activated so it couldn't have a corresponding number. The phone was a nokia e73.
