I have iphone4 from us locked to AT&T, was on 4.0.2, unlocked with ultrasn0w. I have upgraded to 4.2.1 with tss server running to preserve baseband, once done I have jail broken with gp but now I am unable to use phone as it is saying it needs the registered carriers sim to activate, what can I do to get past this?

Every time you upgrade or restore firmware to your phone it needs to be activated with an original carrier SIM in your case ATT. This sim does not need to be active. Once the phone is activated you will also need to install Ultras0w from Cydia to unlock the bseband if you are not using ATT.

If you do not have an ATT sim you can hactivate the phone and believe the option is available in GP.

After a restore, redsn0w 0.9.6rc19 can be used to jb and activate.

Never seen any options in gp, just the button the jailbreak. So if I run redsn0w now on the phone it will push past this screen or do I need to do anything else?

Okay, ran redsn0w, got into home screen, installed ultrasn0w and all was working fine. I then backed up from previous restore and now not gettin any signal, baseband has been preserved etc

    Pls verify the
    Modem Firmware / Baseband version?
    And current iOS?

    Setting / General / About / ...

Not sure why a 'restore from previous backup' is causing no-signal .....

If all else fails, set up as new phone. All music, apps, etc can be restore by a sync.

Mobile Internet, like Safari, weather, stocks, etc not working?

    Add the following: " internet2.voicestream.com " to:
Settings / General / Network / Cellular Data Network / APN

I go settings, general, network but then can't follow, I have 3 toggle switches for 3G, cellular data and data roaming, have a VPN section, says I can add a VPN configuration.

I fairly sure that is controlled by the carrier bundle. What ever one the phone is using.

Am I able to manually paste a carrier bundle or force an update if carrier settings?

With an authorized carrier, Reset Network Setting may help.
The data APN is typically set in their bundle.

There are ways around this, no simple ways
