I am thinking about unlocking this iPhone 3G with BB 05.15.04 / 4.2.1 and I have read above that it will loose GPS. What does this mean? If I download an app other than Maps and type in a start and ending address will it still be able to look up directions? What are the success rates of unlocking these iPhone 3G? THANK YOU!
The iPad doesn't (rather, didn't) have GPS hardware. Consequently, the baseband doesn't have GPS functionality, and hence GPS related functions will not work on your iPhone. You will be able to use maps for finding directions from point A to point B, find your approximate location using cell tower information, etc. You'll lose the accuracy of GPS systems and everything related to it.
You should keep in mind that going to the iPad baseband on the iPhone is a one way street. The process is irreversible, and because it is irreversible, it voids your warranty for sure. There are some other downsides as well (updates dependent on firmware, etc.).
The new iPad seems to have gps. Can this mean those of us stuck with the 6.15 bb may be able to upgrade to the new ipad bb and get gps back (without losing the unlock in the process)?

Simple answer is no, unless you really want us to go into detail why. There is a reason why everyone says you can never go back after installing iPad BB.
