I'm trying to gain access with custom RAM, but it seems that knowing the firmware version is a requirement.
Is there a way I can find out the firmware version of a disabled iPhone 4?

What do you mean by 'Disabled' is it not working or something....?

Yes, it was left without charging for a long time (several months), and now it displays "iPhone is disabled. Connect to iTunes".

Ok than just plugin to iTunes and it should show up there. Go under the phone and it will say the phone's system version/iOS version.

iTunes displays a message saying that I must enter a passcode while there's no way I can do that on the iPhone since it's disabled. In iTunes, there's no phone tab whatsoever if I dismiss the message.

Ok than you'll have to force restore. This tutorial should do it for you.
After you do that just simply sync it and everything and you'll be good to go!

It says that because the password has been entered incorrectly several times... But that's not a problem as you can restore from the last backup you have & that'll resolve your issue

Thank you guys for replying but I already know these options. The problem is that I don't want to lose any of the data on the iPhone. Idon't remember what's the firmware version but the phone is not jailbroken. It's quite difficult I know but I'm trying to address the problems one at a time. First knowing the firmware, then jailbreaking, then mounting a custom RAM to gain access and delete the "keychain-2.db" file.
I already tried the "Automatic SSH ramdisk creation tool" but I'm getting a "device unsupported" message, because it's not jailbroken I guess. So doing it manually is my only option.
So again, is there a way to determine the firmware version without iTunes?

In both DFU and recovery modes, iTunes says that "your iPhone is up to date." Does this mean that 5.1 is installed, or does this message appear for all firmware versions.

Under your iPhone section there is an option that says 'Check For Software Updates' Did you click that? iTunes doesn't refresh it every time you open it, It will refresh about every 10 days or so, So try checking for them and see if it says there are any available.

Actually there are no options other that "check for updates" button. The button is grayed out, not clickable, but near the button iTunes says that the iPhone is up to date.

Very odd... Your iPhone must be really screwy or something, Did you ever get it to restore? Is your iTunes the latest version?

I have the same problem with my Iphone 4. My phone was disabled and had to be restored a week ago, I don't remember the new firmware. My itunes is the latest version. I need to activate the phone however I don't have an AT&T simcard anymore, can't even get one in this part of the world. So how do I check the firmware coz if its 5.1 then i should just go head and use it as a paperweight or a brick for the wall.

Most likely it's 5.1 unless you used a custom iPSW. 5.1 came out a few eeeks ago and iTunes automatically puts you on the latest firmware. So you are probably on 5.1

You're trying to jailbreak it correct? If so, then yes for now. Hopefully a jailbreak will be available within the next few weeks (The Dev Team has hinted us on that) So for now: No jailbreak.
